FAQ
Everything you need to know about WhatSurah.
What age is WhatSurah suitable for?
The game is designed for ages 6 and up. Younger children can participate with adult guidance. The listening and placement mechanics make it accessible to families with mixed ages.
How many players can play?
WhatSurah works best with 2–10 players. You can play solo as a personal challenge, or in teams for larger groups.
How long does a game take?
A typical game lasts 30–40 minutes. You can adjust the winning target (default is 10 points) to make games shorter or longer.
Do I need an app to play?
No download required to start playing. Scan the QR code on any card with your phone's camera — iOS and Android both detect QR codes natively and open the recitation clip directly in your browser.
The free WhatSurah app (available on iOS and Android) gives a better experience: faster scanning, offline play, flash-card quizzes, and score tracking. It's optional, not required.
Which reciters are available?
The app currently features Abu Bakr al-Shatri, Saad Al-Ghamdi, Maher Al-Muaiqly, and Mishary Alafasy (deprecated). You can switch reciters in the settings.
Is an internet connection required?
Yes, you need an internet connection to stream audio clips. The mobile app will support offline downloads soon.
Can I play without the physical cards?
Yes! We offer a free Print & Play PDF for home printing. You can also use the web app to practice listening and identifying surahs without cards.
What's included in the box?
The boxed edition includes 114 double-sided cards (one per surah), rulebook, and optional score chips. Each card shows surah information on the front and a unique QR code on the back.
What languages are supported?
The app and game interface support English, Arabic, French, German, and Turkish. The Quran recitation is always in classical Arabic.
Is this educational?
Absolutely. WhatSurah helps players memorize the order of surahs, recognize recitation styles, and deepen familiarity with the Quran's structure, all through engaging gameplay.
Is WhatSurah a good gift for a Hafiz or Hafizah?
Yes — WhatSurah is one of the most requested Islamic gifts for Quran memorisers. For someone who has completed hifz, the Hafiz difficulty level (one verse, random start) makes it a genuine challenge. For families with mixed levels, beginners and advanced players can play together, making it a thoughtful Eid gift or celebration present for anyone on their Quran journey.
Is WhatSurah an Islamic board game?
WhatSurah is a competitive Islamic card game, not a board game. It uses 114 physical surah cards, a QR-based audio mechanic, and a timeline placement system. If you are searching for an Islamic board game or Quran quiz game for family game night, WhatSurah is the closest purpose-built option: it tests surah recognition, Quran order, and listening skills through competitive gameplay.
